At the Italian Cultural Institute and within the Festival de Fotografia de São Paolo and the events of the Festival Cidade da Cultura, the exhibition Culturas Insulares focuses on the relationships that island communities have woven in synergy with the local natural context. These relationships, over the centuries, have allowed the survival and adaptation of these communities to environments that are often inhospitable and with limited resources.
The exhibition reflects on the productivity of the Italian islands, which sometimes manifests itself in agricultural forms, other times in mining or fishing activities, also touching on aspects related to tourism which, in most cases, also leads to excessive consumption of resources and problems of waste management and disposal.
Through 44 photographs and a video, the exhibition tells the story of the cultural landscapes of the Mediterranean islands, the result of ingenuity and synergy with nature, which today, due to seasonal depopulation and an economy increasingly oriented towards mass tourism, are at risk of disappearing.
